Equality & Diversity Leadership Launch

We were delighted to see 18 participants at the launch of our Equality & Diversity Leadership programme. Over the next five months the participants will explore their leadership styles and preferences and having time to reflect with a school based mentor. 

We will share insights from the programme as it progresses and use it as a way of identifying further CPD to support progress.

What are the core objectives:

• To ensure that teachers from the identified gender and BME groups feel more confident about their leadership potential
• To support teachers in thinking about their career progression 
• To improve the succession planning for leadership in schools

Why is there an Equality & Diversity focus?

• Currently, only 3.1% of headteachers are from black and minority ethnic groups (compared to 7.6% of all teachers).
• At secondary, just 38.2% of headteachers are female (compared to 73.8% of all classroom teachers). (Source: School Workforce in England: November 2015 statistical first release).

This funding - to be used through Teaching Schools - reinforces the government’s commitment to increasing the diversity of school leadership, raising aspirations and the chances of successful promotion among people with leadership potential.
